Palestine has been officially occupied since 1948. The Israeli state was created out of nothing by the United Nations as an extension of the Zionist movement beginning in the late 19th century, and as compensation for the horrors of the Holocaust. By 1882, European Jews were already moving into Palestine and displacing the indigenous population by establishing their own settlements.

I spent last summer in Palestine, and while I was there I heard an Israeli professor at Hebrew University describe the human rights situation in Jerusalem. When asked about the one- or two-state solution, she said, "I don't know what the solution is, but we cannot stand for this.

A quick scan of the Forbes "Top 10 Most Lucrative College Majors" list, while disappointing to many an ambitious English major, shows that financial success lies in knowing about finances. An economics major came in second on the list, with the median income for zero to five years of experience being $48,100.

During my Italian classes in high school, my teacher gave us many prompts: you are lost in Rome, ask for directions; you are in a grocery store, buy food for a picnic. There was one we didn't get to: you are videochatting with a stranger. What will you say? What will you show? Perhaps she should have.

In his latest film, Tim Burton, director of such movies as "The Nightmare Before Christmas" and "Edward Scissorhands," teams up with Disney again to craft the new, major 3D motion picture, "Alice in Wonderland."
Burton takes the rather unexpected route of producing somewhat of a sequel to the original Lewis Carroll tale of "Alice in Wonderland," which ends up resembling something more akin to the second book in the series, "Through the Looking Glass.

In March 1996, Rolling Stone dispatched David Lipsky to Bloomington, Ill., to profile David Foster Wallace, whose novel "Infinite Jest" had obtained a "miasma of hype," in Wallace's terms, "that feeds on itself." Lipsky joined Wallace for the final five days of the "Infinite Jest" book tour, but Rolling Stone scrapped the article until Wallace's suicide more than a decade later, when Lipsky sifted through the tapes from their road trip to form the basis of a National Magazine Award-winning story.

Trying to interview the Belfry was like attempting to capture and pin down a rare bird specimen only to have it struggle and flap its colorful wings. The house, the random objects, and the people that create "The Belfry" resist interpretation. The residents of the Belfry have, over the past two years, included around twenty different Macalester students.

Last week I was invited to join a Facebook group created by Hamline graduate Jordan Dibb called, "I Walk for Love." Beginning March 27, Dibb will leave Minneapolis on foot, planning to walk 1800 miles to Miami in 100 days to raise money for Haiti. He has partnered with Action Against Hunger and hopes to raise $100,000 by the end of his walk.

Paying respects to track and field, cross country I realize there are a lot of Minnesota State sports to cover in February/March but when there's an MSU team that wins a conference I think they deserve coverage from the Reporter. As an MSU Track and Field/ Cross Country alumni I am frustrated that the Reporter isn't giving the MSU Track and Field teams the recognition they deserve for the outstanding seasons they have had.
