Late last month, UNO Hockey announced the hiring of new assistant coach Mike Guentzel. Guentzel comes to Omaha after serving last season as the head coach and general manager of the Des Moines Buccaneers of the United States Hockey League.

The hiring gives the Mavs a coaching staff in Dean Blais, Mike Hastings and Guentzel who have experience at all levels of hockey including USHL, NCAA, NHL, and International play.

Both Catangui's side and the university have said that one reason for his firing was because his recommendations for spraying for soybean aphids differed from the State's recommendation.

At least the NFL leopard has changed some of its spots by at last acknowledging the risk of permanent brain damage inherent in its sport. Now comes the tough part, actually transforming a culture that so values the headhunter ethic.

After years of denial, the NFL's announcement last week - that it will hang posters in all 32 team locker rooms warning players about the long-term dangers of head trauma - would seem a drastic leap forward if it weren't so obviously overdue.

 Since she came to Madison Area Technical College in 2007, it has been clear that Madison is capable of doing quite a lot.
