The switch from Oracle Collaboration Suite to Google Applications for Education has been accelerated from occurring within the calendar year to happening within the next few days, Associate Vice President of ITS Jerry Sanders said Wednesday. ITS plans to have everyone signed up and using Google Apps by March 31.

Big things are on the horizon for Macalester's Board of Trustees.
At its May meeting the Board will announce a permanent successor to Jeffrey Larson, who stepped down as Board chair in August. The Rev. Timothy Hart-Andersen is currently serving as interim chair.

It is uncertain whether Macalester will file charges against the college employee who stole $20,860 from the college over a nine-month period, Director of College Relations Doug Stone said.
Stone was unable to provide any more details about the current status of the investigation.

The Institute for Global Citizenship's national advisory board met for the first time on campus since its creation in 2005. The small, closed meeting consisted of a "getting to know each other" session for the seven or eight board members present and a student showcase, said Ahmed Samatar, dean of the institute.

After philanthropist Shelby M.C. Davis officially announced his $13.5 million donation to Macalester students who graduated from United World Colleges last week, Macalester awarded him an honorary degree for his generosity to the 93 mostly international Macalester students, who hail from the 12 UWC secondary schools sprinkled around the globe.

Working under Macalester College Student Government's External Relations Committee, students hosted the first-ever Facilities Management appreciation day on Thursday morning.
MCSG Vice President Brian Stephenson, who spearheaded the event, said approximately 40 facilities management workers and 15 students schmoozed over a Continental breakfast and cups of coffee while the Sirens serenaded the crowd with a 15-minute set.

Last Thursday the marble halls of the State Capitol were filled with groups vying for lawmakers' attention as they held sessions to pass a billion dollar bonding bill in response to the state budget deficit.
Among the school counselors and volunteer firefighters was a group of about two- dozen Macalester students, staff and faculty participating in Day at the Capitol, an annual lobbying event where students across the state ask lawmakers to continue their support of the State Grant program.
