One year after reaching $700 million for the first time, Macalester's endowment has lost more than 20 percent of its value in the financial crisis threatening the global economy. Chief Investment Officer Craig Aase '70 said that as of Oct. 20, his office estimated the endowment's value to be $550 million, down $150 million from its peak in October 2007.

Actor Martin Sheen, most famous for his roles as President Jed Bartlet on "The West Wing" and Captain Willard in "Apocalypse Now," spoke to a crowd of about 200 on Oct. 14 in Kagin Commons. As the University of St. Thomas terminates their theater program, Macalester's theater department is examining the importance of the fine arts in a liberal arts education.
"What it says to the academic world," Harry Waters, an assistant professor in Macalester's Theater and Dance, said of the dissolved program, "is a lack of importance in the fine arts.

In a unanimous vote on Oct. 11, the Board of Trustees approved the $7.5 million request to fund a new cooling system at Macalester, which was the only major issue discussed during the public segment of their Fall meeting.
The measure was met with a brief discussion by a few members who were concerned about student response to the project, citing concerns expressed by members of the Macalester Conservation and Renewable Energy Society (MacCARES) about the process the college used to settle on a design for the new system.

David Ellison '12 and Sam DelSerra '12 were robbed at gunpoint on Oct. 17, around 11 p.m. DelSerra said they were leaving a party on Grand Avenue near Kowalski's Market when they passed a car with several people standing around it. The two continued walking for a while and noticed they were being followed by two black males in their 20s wearing dark hooded sweatshirts and bandanas on their faces.

Oberlin protects students from suffocation by minority group The symbolic erection of 30-foot smoking perimeters, chalked lines in the pavement around Oberlin buildings, has set the community ablaze, according to the Oct. 10 issue of the Oberlin Review. The intervention was made on behalf of non-smokers in clarifying an ambiguous school policy, depicted by the enterprising guardians of public health (backed by ResEd, the Center for Leadership and Health promotion, and a $500 grant) as a silent majority subject to a dangerous threat perpetrated by a noxious and outspoken minority group.
