Obama wins, campus erupts
At 10 p.m. on Nov. 4, Macal-ester's campus erupted when the television news networks declared Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., the new president-elect. Students flooded the campus in a several hour-long celebration of the election of a new leader to the White House and a culmination of two years of campaigning.

About 20 students improved their skills at advocating policy positions and communicating with elected officials through small group exercises, lectures and role-playing on Nov. 1 in the Weyerhaeuser Boardroom in a workshop called Debating for Democracy, or D4D.

Democratic-Farmer-Labor Senate hopeful Al Franken spoke in the Campus Center Sunday, his last of several stops at Macalester since announcing his candidacy in February 2007. Franken was joined by Congresswoman Betty McCollum, Service Employees International Union President Andy Stern, and the late Senator Paul Wellstone's son David Wellstone.

Obama's victory not only breaks down racial barriers and promises an era of hope and change, it is also the first time that the president, vice president and their wives will have worked in higher education, which may influence future policy decisions. President-elect Obama taught constitutional law at the University of Chicago Law School from 1992 to 2004.
