We're cattle, not cowboys

On Wednesday, Oct. 14, the Senate Finance Committee passed S. 1796, or "America's Healthy Future Act of 2009," by a vote of 14 to 9. This much-anticipated vote passed the last committee draft of healthcare reform to the floor, once again evidencing that this current healthcare reform effort has legislatively progressed farther than preceding efforts.

Where are the students of color in the Spotlight?

As a senior, I've read just about every issue of The Mac Weekly since I came to Macalester, and though I understand that it is an independent newspaper and so cannot be taken as the ultimate representative for Mac, I do have a question concerning the Spotlight section.

Letter to the Editor

To the Editor: As compelling as it is to analyze corporate timber giants or complain about printing backups, it's time we think about that other, less talked about, part of the paper story: us. This week is Printing Awareness Week in the library and Humanities Resource Center-and we're asking Mac students to start thinking about how simple actions have a BIG impact.

A note from the editor on race, Spotlight and The Mac Weekly

In the opinion section this week, Celeste Prince raises questions about how The Mac Weekly selects which students to profile in its Spotlight section and how the paper addresses issues of race. Discussing race in the Mac Weekly office

In her article this week, Celeste Prince notes that only four of the 25 students (or 16%) profiled in the Spotlight this year have been students of color and wonders at the meaning of the lack of representation. Prince's article raises questions about race at Macalester that have not been asked enough by many on campus or in the pages of The Mac Weekly.
