A new transaction system for auxiliary points on the Macalester Plaid Pass and a laundry catastrophe in the Kirk basement have left several Macalester students with soggy sheets and slightly bigger credit card bills.
Card Service Manager Onenee Saloka said the school recently started using Manage My ID, or MMID, a Web-based system that allows people to add money to their aux.

This upcoming January term has only one college-sponsored study-away program, an Environmental Studies class with the University of Minnesota in Jamaica, which is a significant decrease from the eight study-away offerings last January.
During January term "students and faculty may arrange to do independent projects or internships for 1 or 2 credits," Registrar Jayne Niemi said.

As the extended recession slows the growth of Macalester's faculty, the college's Educational Policy and Governance Committee is looking to increase coordination and communication about how to apportion faculty positions among academic departments.
But the hold on adding new faculty positions this year is a marked contrast from the swell in faculty size of the last decade.

With $75,000 in the budget to use for student spaces, the Macalester College Student Government is eliciting student feedback to help in allocating that money. Student organizations were invited to an open forum Nov. 3 at the MCSG meeting, allowing representatives from student orgs to share their views on student spaces and make a case for their specific needs.

On Tuesday, Nov. 2, Dean of Students Jim Hoppe received a report of an incident of "hate speech" painted on the wall of the grate area beside Doty Hall. After a string of similar incidents earlier this semester, Hoppe wasn't prepared to simply go through the usual routine in dealing with the incident.

Macalester students often find themselves in the library or the Campus Center studying late at night. For those students who do not feel comfortable walking home alone, Macalester Safe Walk will escort them.
According to their mission statement on the Macalester College Web site, "the purpose of the Safe Walk service is to provide a safe walk for Macalester students, faculty, and staff within a one mile radius from the campus boundaries.
