With at least 86 student-led organizations, 19 varsity sports, 15 club sports and over 200 volunteer opportunities, it is abundantly clear that co- and extra-curricular activities are a vital part of a Macalester student's education. And yet, after four years of balancing volunteerism, athletics, clubs and EXCO classes with academics, Macalester transcripts only recognize classes taken each semester.

Last Tuesday, I introduced the Minnesota Energy Challenge to Macalester at the monthly faculty meeting. The MN Energy Challenge is an online tool to make pledges to save money and reduce your energy use in a way that works for you. A fun part about the energy challenge is that you can be part of a team that will show the collective energy savings and the amount of CO2 that a team has avoided producing.

On Tuesday, Nov. 17 Twin Cities residents Carrie Feldman and Scott DeMuth refused to testify in front of a federal grand jury in Davenport, Iowa. They were found to be in contempt of court and were immediately handcuffed and hauled away by U.S. marshals. According to District Judge John Jarvey, they will both remain incarcerated until they agree to testify.

As a proactive measure the normal format of Frag-ments will be disrupted. The normal rules and codes this series adheres to will be suspended in order to efficiently and effectively deal with a new situation (although it should not be seen as a response to 'changing facts on the ground' as this is a proactive measure).
