A violent 'Macbeth' premiers at the Guthrie

If being at Macalester has heightened your appetite for all things Scottish, then you won't want to miss the Guthrie Theater's production of the ultimate Scottish play, William Shakespeare's Macbeth. The play opened last Sunday and plays through April. As with most Shakespeare plays, you should make sure to brush up on the story before attending.

Grammy nominated Enso String Quartet performs

The Enso String Quartet performed at Macalester on Wednesday night. Different Trains, the three-movement piece composed by Steve Reich, was part of the program presented at the concert. One of the things that made this performance special was its multimedia nature; in Different Trains, recorded speech is "translated" into melodic motion in Reich's style: repetitive patterns that create an almost hypnotizing minimalistic texture.

Jeff bridges the artistic mind and the 'Crazy Heart'

"Crazy Heart," directed by Scott Cooper, is one of those movies that exist for the sole purpose of winning awards. The film features solid performances, a simple narrative, and that general indie vibe that you may expect from an Oscar hopeful. It was never expected to attract a wide audience, and it is likely that the only place you have heard of it is on movie websites or through some form of highbrow advertising.
