FACE AIDS raises awareness, funds

Members of the Macalester community have attended a number of events recently as part of world AIDS week. The student organization FACE AIDS collaborated with Winton Health Services to create events to raise awareness of the AIDS epidemic.
The organization FACE AIDS was introduced to Macalester last year by David Lawerence and is dedicated to raising awareness and money for Partners in Health, according to Catie Glatz '09, a member of the organization.
"[Partners in Health is] an organization that works in Haiti, Rwanda, Peru, and Russia with people suffering from tuberculosis and AIDS," Glatz said. "They believe in equal treatment for all and do not base policy on cost-effectiveness. They believe health care is a human right."
The student organization sold pins as well as t-shirts featuring Partners in Health founder Paul Farmer. The money raised by this year's sales of shirts and pins and the matching donations were given to Partners in Health.
Over the last two weeks, several discussions and presentations have been organized to raise awareness, including a screening of "Philadelphia"and a panel about the politics of AIDS, Glatz said.
